Pressure at the top of stairs
The single most dangerous mistake. A determined toddler can push a pressure-mounted gate loose — Consumer Reports and JPMA are unanimous that the top of any staircase requires a hardware-mounted gate.
The walk-through shrinks as it widens
Opening width is not walk-through width. Single-panel gates span only 28-48 inches, and a super-wide multi-panel gate can leave a passage as narrow as 16 inches; extensions run $15-$35 and are model-specific.
