CHEAPEST ENTRY
~$60 renewed — roughly a tenth the price of the best-overall Chromebook Plus.
SURVIVES K-5
Education-edition build — reinforced corners, rubber rails and a spill-resistant keyboard made for school fleets.
SMALL HANDS
11.6" chassis sized for young children, not a full-size 14" clamshell.
SCHOOL-DAY BATTERY
10 hours of battery — covers a full school day.
UPDATE RUNWAY
Auto Update Expiration June 2029 — fine for a 2–3 year first machine.

The catch — co-equal billing, always

It's renewed and its updates end in June 2029. You get a used unit with cosmetic wear and about three years of ChromeOS support left — a fine first machine for a young child, but not one to carry into middle school.

Traps — this verdict avoids

Trap 01

The expiration-date trap

ChromeOS updates end on a fixed Auto Update Expiration date that varies wildly by model — the Acer Spin 311 stops updating in June 2028 while 2024–2025 platforms run into the mid-2030s. A cheap Chromebook near its AUE is a false economy.

Trap 02

Too little RAM

A 4GB Chromebook is fine for a young child's 2–5 tabs and one app, but it chokes past 10 open tabs or multiple Android apps. Middle-schoolers and up need 8GB — buy for the age the child is growing into, not the age they are now.

Trap 03

The vanished rugged tier

The sub-$200 kid-proof 11.6" segment left retail in 2026: the ASUS Flip CR1 that sold at ~$180 in June now asks ~$442, and the cheapest picks are renewed units whose update clock started at the original platform date, not your purchase date.
