UNDER $150
$109.99 typical, down from a $149.99 list — $40 of headroom left for the VPN subscription itself.
REAL WI-FI 7
Dual-band BE3600 (688 + 2882 Mbps) with MLO and 4K-QAM — the cheapest credible Wi-Fi 7 VPN router on this card.
MID-SIZE HOME
Sized for a 10-25 device mid-size home, with AiMesh to add nodes later instead of replacing the router.
SPLIT TUNNELING
Stock AsusWRT runs OpenVPN and WireGuard clients; flash AsusWRT-Merlin for policy routing and a kill switch.
LONG-TERM SUPPORT
3-year warranty plus commercial-grade AiProtection Pro — and no firmware end-of-support date like the single-vendor appliances carry.

The catch — co-equal billing, always

The tunnel is the slow part. WireGuard lands around 200-350 Mbps here — roughly a third of the Flint 2's ~900 Mbps. On a 500 Mbps or gigabit plan you will feel it every single time the VPN is on. This is a Wi-Fi 7 router that does VPN, not a VPN router.

Dealbreaker? Runner-up №1 roughly triples the tunnel for $60 more ↓

Traps — this verdict avoids

Trap 01

The Wi-Fi rating is not the VPN speed

VPN throughput is CPU-bound, not Wi-Fi-bound. OpenVPN-only routers lose 60-75% of line speed — often down to 150-250 Mbps — no matter what the BE7200 badge on the box says. We rank by measured WireGuard throughput, not the marketing number.

Trap 02

Single-vendor appliances expire

ExpressVPN's Aircove works only with ExpressVPN and loses firmware support at the end of 2027 — and it is now sold out at Amazon and at ExpressVPN's own store. Provider-agnostic OpenWrt and Merlin routers have no cutoff date.

Trap 03

Stock firmware tunnels all-or-nothing

Keeping Netflix, banking or a console outside the tunnel needs AsusWRT-Merlin, DD-WRT or OpenWrt. Many stock firmwares only do everything-or-nothing routing, so check the firmware before you check the specs.
