The answer — one pick, priced

TP‑Link Tapo L535E
$65 under your budget
1100 lumens at CRI 90+ for ~$15 — more light per dollar than any other single bulb here, Matter-certified and hub-free for one room.
Fit ledger — need → measured evidence
■ The catch — co-equal billing, always
Raw lumens are not the same as tested light. WiZ's 800-lumen bulb measured higher usable lux in testing than brighter rivals, and it brings a 30+ scene library and SpaceSense motion detection the Tapo app has no answer for. You are buying brightness, not features.

■ Every product has a catch. Verdicts that hide it are how bad buys happen.

Traps — this verdict avoids
Why the TP-Link Tapo L535E is right for you
It avoids every trap below — and for just me, under $80, it is the pick because it delivers:
The dimmer-switch trap
A smart bulb on an old wall dimmer will flicker, buzz, or be damaged — almost every bulb here needs a plain on/off switch. Replace the dimmer, or run Philips Hue with a Hue Dimmer Switch, which is built for it.
Single bulbs got expensive again
July 2026 unwound June's discounts — Sengled's Matter single went ~$4 to ~$12, Tapo ~$11 to ~$15, Hue ~$38 to ~$50. Multi-packs held: Linkind is ~$6 a bulb at ~$24 for four. Cheap Matter is now a multi-pack story.
Thread needs a border router
Nanoleaf's Thread bulbs need a HomePod Mini, Apple TV 4K or newer Echo — without one they drop to Bluetooth-only with limited range. And as of July 2026 every Nanoleaf Thread A19 listing was unavailable on Amazon and sold out at Nanoleaf.
